Will Chipy be bringing back Blackjack in the Play for Coins section of the website?

A while back there was a Blackjack option that could be played with your Chipy Coins. It was by Mascot Gaming. Any Blackjack option would be better than nothing, although I do see that the focus is more on Slots in the Play for Coins section.

Does Blackjack teams have an edge in tournaments?

I played and witnessed  Blackjack teams , I know they exist  to help each other   eliminate other players like me. For Example , I had an opportunity  in semi- finals to make final table, but I new I had to hit on hard 15  to make final table to give me a chance. The player to my right  did not have enough chips to make final table no matter what she did, she was looking at my chips and decided to hit on 19,  the card  came out was a 5 , would have given me a 20 and a chance to move on,  I got a king instead , busted out, I got  little emotional  and yelled at her for helping her team members on the end make it to final table.  She just stood there quietly like nothing happened, so obvious .Maybe it's just me,I have great instincts on  other players teaming up sometimes,  I was right that time.

What is Blackjack and How Can You Play It?

Free Blackjack Game

Blackjack is a popular casino card game in which you and the dealer compare cards. The goal is simple: you need to get to a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer's, without exceeding 21.

Throughout the game, you need to make different decisions that will help you beat the house. Blackjack has an 'easy to learn, hard to master’ format, which makes it the sweet spot for beginners and veterans alike.

A game of blackjack features at least one player, as it can be played between you and the dealer, namely 'heads-up’ blackjack.

Different game variations and rules require at least two players at the table, but the minimum number can vary.

Social preferences

If you want to be social, a typical blackjack game can accommodate up to seven players. However, depending on the game variation and table limit, other games can allow even nine or ten people to play at the same time.

On the other hand, if you like cozy and less chit-chatty games, some casinos also offer ‘mini’ blackjack tables that only seat three or four players.

Blackjack On The Go

Free Blackjack on Smartphones

If you're the comfy type that doesn't fancy crowded places and prefers chatrooms, online casinos are a match made in heaven.

Contrary to popular belief, land-based casinos are not the only ones offering cool vibes and the excitement of winning.

Online casinos have evolved a lot, and their vast range of great-looking games can now be played on smartphones as well. This means you can play blackjack online for fun or for actual cash anywhere, anytime.

Blackjack Bonanza - Going Beyond 21 With Popular Variants

We, humans, are prone to boredom, so why not make something more exciting? The original blackjack game is fun and exciting by itself, but you can always spice it up with different rules and gameplay.

Let's see what blackjack variations you can play online:

The Classic

Free Blackjack Game The Classic Variant

The good old blackjack all love and play. It has the basic format and rules - Get closer to 21 without exceeding it and you've aced the dealer.

The European

Free Blackjack Variants The European Blackjack

A soft twist on the OG blackjack. The key difference lies in the dealer's hand. They will only receive one card face-up, so they can't check for blackjack until you've completed your turn.

Spanish 21

Free Blackjack Variant Spanish 21

This one is played with a Spanish deck, meaning all 10s are removed. You can get bonus payouts based on certain hand combinations, like hitting a 21 with 5 or more cards.

Pontoon

Free Blackjack Game Variant Pontoon

Often played in UK and Australia, this variant keeps the goal of the original, and you can hit as many times as you want. However, the dealer's hand is hidden until you've completed your turn.

Blackjack Switch

Free Blackjack Game Variant Blackjack Switch

Since you are dealt two cards, you can switch the second card between them. This increases your control over your hands and also raises the winning odds, at the cost of being paid even money.

Double Exposure

The dealer's cards are face-up, which gives you great advantage, but you lose all ties and the payout is made of even money.

Blackjack for Newbies - The Basics

Rome wasn't built in one day, and you won't get a multimillionaire blackjack wizard overnight. You cannot sharpen your skill if you are not familiar with the basics.

Don't worry, though. We will show you the way around. Enjoy the process of discovering cool strategies and have fun while learning.

Winning, Losing, and Tie Conditions

Simplicity at its finest. Well, to a certain extent. Let's get down to business, shall we?

You win if:

Free Blackjack Game Winning Conditions

  • Get as close to 21 without exceeding 21;
  • Your hand totals higher than the dealer's;
  • The dealer goes over 21 while your hand is still under 21;
  • You get a natural blackjack, meaning an Ace and a 10-value card as your first hand.

You lose if:

Free Blackjack Game Losing Conditions

  • You go over 21; If your hand totals more than 21, this is called a 'bust’ and you lose the round;
  • You have a hand that totals lower than the dealer's hand. As soon as the dealer's hand is higher than yours, you're out;
  • You and the dealer get a tie; While technically you don't really lose, a tie (also known as a 'push') will neither get you a win, nor a loss;
  • The dealer gets a blackjack.

Keep in mind

In blackjack, the dealer plays based on a specific set of rules. So, even if you have a higher hand, the dealer might still win if their hand meets certain conditions.

Always ensure you understand the rules and format of the blackjack game you are playing!

Understanding Ties

Free Blackjack Game Tie Conditions

Pushes happen when you and the dealer's hands have the same total value. This can happen in several ways:

  • Both of you have blackjack (an Ace and 10-value card such as a King, Queen, Jack, or 10);
  • Both of you have the same total hand value (not counting blackjack);
  • Both of you bust and go over 21.

Knowing Cards' Values

Free Blackjack Game Card Values

Despite its simplicity, calculating the blackjack hand value is essential. Easy counting, easy math. Let's go!

  • All cards have face value, so they are counted at their point value. Cards from 2 through 10 have that number as their value.
  • All paint cards (face cards), so Jacks, Queens, and Kings value 10 each.
  • An Ace values 1 or 11, depending on which value works better in your hand.

Note

You get a 'blackjack’ when you have an Ace and a 10-value card as your first two cards.

If you split Aces and get a 10-value card, it will only count as 21.

That's the basic stuff you need to know about calculating values. Here's an easy example: if you have a 2 and an 8, your hand values a 10. If you have a 5 and any paint card, your hand values a 15.

Understanding the ''Good Hands"

You know the saying ''you'll know it when you see it”? Let's make that easier for you and tell you what you should know about good hands from the start. That’s because a good hand greatly improves your winning odds and allows you to be mindful of more strategies and combinations.

Soft vs Hard

Free_Blackjack_Good_Hands.png

Terminology is key here, so let’s shed some light on soft and hard hands.

  • A soft hand contains an Ace that can be counted as either 1 or 11, depending on your preference.
  • A hard hand doesn’t contain an Ace, or the Ace can only be counted as a 1.

What Makes A Good Hand?

Free Blackjack Game Good Blackjack Hands

Aside from the natural blackjack, other good hands can include those having a total value of 18, 19, or 20.

That’s because they are more likely to win the round, especially if the dealer has a weak hand.

Let’s lay down three popular examples of a good hand:

  • Soft 18 - This one contains an Ace and a 7, which can be counted as either 8 or 18. Because of this flexibility, a soft 18 is considered a relatively strong combination. In this situation, you are given more freedom to hit or stand depending on the dealer’s face-up card.
  • Hard 20 - This one’s made of two cards which total 20 without an Ace. This is one of the God-tier hands in the entire game, and it is recommended to always stand on it because it’s very difficult to improve upon.
  • Traditional 21 - This is it. The supreme hand is also known as ‘natural blackjack’ or simply ‘blackjack’ due to its Ace + a 10-value card combination.

A natty blackjack simply cannot be beaten unless the dealer also has the same natty blackjack. However, as they say in France, no guts, no glory because you are paid a higher rate for this hand, usually at 3:2 odds, due to the difficulty of scoring such a good hand.

What Makes a Not-So-Good Hand?

Free Blackjack Game Poor Hands

Knowing both sides of the coin is of the essence in blackjack. Therefore, you should also know about weaker hands.

A weak hand in blackjack is a hand that’s very likely to get you losing. Generally speaking, weak hands are those with a total value that’s too high to risk hitting but at the same time too low to give you a good chance of beating the house.

For example,

A hand that totals 12 to 16 can be a bad one, because you risk busting if you hit, and it also has super low chances of beating the dealer’s hand.

Important

Knowing good and bad hands is one of the pillars of developing a winning blackjack strategy.

A Game of Choice - Understanding Your Options During a Blackjack Round

Free Blackjack Game Decisions

It’s you versus the house (and versus other players, by case). You must carefully consider a few things you can do in land-based and online blackjack games after you’re dealt the initial two cards.

Stand - If you think you have a strong enough hand, go for a Stand. This shows you don’t want any more cards. Remember to find a balance between having enough cards to increase the winning odds and not taking too many cards and bust.

Hit - When you want to hit, you will prompt the dealer or the online blackjack software to give you another card. You can hit as many times as you want as long as you don’t go over 21. Exceed it, and it’s game over.

Double Down - This lets you double your initial bet and get one additional card when your first cards have been dealt. Mind that you need to match your initial bet if you go for doubling down.

Split - When you are dealt two cards of the same value, you can split them up in separate hands and play each hand separately. This also means you must place an additional bet equal to your initial one.

Surrender - Even if the captain goes down with the ship, you won’t really go home empty-handed. If the casino allows you to surrender, you can give up your hand before the dealer plays theirs.

You only give up half of your bet when you surrender.

Note

There are two types of surrender:

Early surrender - Allowed only if the dealer’s face-up card is a 10 or Ace, before the dealer checks for blackjack.

Late surrender - Here, you give up half of your bet after the dealer has checked for blackjack.

Understanding the Table Layout

In both online and brick-and-mortar formats, a blackjack table has its specific layout. Behold:

Free Blackjack Game Table

In these 7 betting circle layouts, you choose the one closest to you and place your bets in there.

Next comes the Insurance line. Insurance allows you to place a special bet that wins if the dealer has a blackjack.

The next line specifies, ‘Dealer must draw to 16 and hit on Soft 17’. This is one of the conditions of that specific blackjack game and informs you that the dealer will hit any time they have a soft 17.

Step 4 - Make Your Decisions

After the game has dealt you the first two cards, it’s time to decide what you’re going to do. Most online games will have the options specified in an easy and accessible way.

Step 5 - Cross your fingers

Free Blackjack House Draw Phase and Result

The software/online dealer will check for blackjack. If you win, it will give you the winning bets. If it’s a push, the bets that tie will be returned. If you bust or lose, it will take your bets.

Step 6 - ‘Huh. Cool! Let’s Do It Again!’

After the end of the round, the cards on the table are discarded and you will have the opportunity to play another round.

Play it as much as you want, as the bets are not real and you won’t lose anything. It’s a great way to practice your skills while having fun.

Main Blackjack Rules to Keep in Mind

Now, even if you’ve got the basics and won a few rounds of free blackjack, it’s really helpful to be aware of certain things in the long run, especially if you are a beginner.

Here are some important aspects when you’re starting out your blackjack journey:\

Learn the basic strategy - Learn it by heart, glue it to the back of your eyelids, and remember it whenever you blink. It will greatly improve your winning odds. Check out our in-depth guide on Blackjack Strategy Charts; you will learn it quickly.

Manage your bankroll - Always set a budget limit and stick to it. Never gamble more than you can afford to lose

Don't take insurance- Insurance is generally not a good idea, as it rarely pays off in the long run. Only consider it in specific situations, such as when counting cards and knowing the deck is rich in 10-value cards.

Avoid side bets - While tempting, side bets typically let the house have high ground and are not worth the shot.

Know when to hit, split, or double down - It all depends on several factors, such as your initial hand or the dealer’s.

For example:

  • If the dealer has a stiff hand (up card having a value of 2 through 6), you risk busting. Never hit on any hard hand of 12 or more if the dealer’s got a stiff hand.
  • If the dealer has a made hand (the face-up card is a 7 through Ace), always hit until you reach at least a hard 17 or any 18.
  • Always hit a 12 if the dealer’s up card is 2 or 3.
  • Split pairs of 8s and Aces.
  • Double down with hands totalling 9,10, or 11 when the dealer’s hand is weak.

A Trip Down the Memory Lane - How did Blackjack Come to Be?

If card games were candy, then Europeans would have a sweet tooth. If you’ve ever wondered where blackjack was born and how it evolved into a worldwide sport, here are some key points to read:

The History of Blackjack

  • The first incarnation dates back to 18th-century France. It was known as "Vingt-et-Un," which means "21" in French.
  • The game spread across Europe and made its way to America during the 19th century.
  • In the early 20th century, casinos in America began offering bonuses for specific hands, such as a Jack of Spades and an Ace of Spades, hence the name ‘blackjack’.
  • During the mid-20th century, a group of mathematicians developed a basic strategy for playing blackjack, which is still used today and can be put into practice if you take a look at our Blackjack Strategy Charts guide.
  • In the 1970s, things got really serious, inasmuch as a team of card counters known as the “MIT Blackjack Team” became famous for constantly beating the casinos at blackjack.

For fun,

The story of the MIT Blackjack Team is tackled in the 2003 book Bringing Down The House and the 2008 movie 21.

  • The first online blackjack games were spawned in the 1990s. Thanks to the Internet’s emergence, the game became more accessible to players worldwide.
